About Homeward Bound

Residential Rehabilitation with Dignity and Care

Homeward Bound, operated by Mental Health Partnerships (MHP), is one of the first community residential rehabilitation programs in Philadelphia. This 16-bed facility provides a homelike, recovery-focused environment for adults living with serious mental health challenges. Residents receive personalized care, life-skills support, and community reintegration services over an 18–24 month stay. The program is currently undergoing renovations to improve capacity and comfort while preserving its rich history as a hub for dignity-driven care. Whether managing medication, learning new routines, or reconnecting with the community, residents are met with compassion and expertise every step of the way.

What Makes Homeward Bound Unique?

  • Historic Roots: Homeward Bound was founded after a landmark advocacy campaign by MHP and Project HOME in 1987, symbolizing a shift from institutionalization to community-based care.
  • Whole-Person Approach: Our model integrates mental health recovery with housing stability, personal development, and social connection.
  • Peer Support: Staff includes Certified Peer Specialists who offer relatable guidance from their own recovery experiences.
  • Future Expansion: Renovations will increase capacity and enhance shared living spaces, ensuring long-term sustainability and comfort.

How It Works

Residents live in a shared, supportive space where they develop the tools needed for independence. With help from staff and peers, they engage in group activities, wellness planning, and individualized goals such as obtaining benefits, securing employment, or reconnecting with family. Staff collaborate with other MHP services to ensure wraparound support, including Mobile Peer Support, Case Management, and Financial Services. Our trauma-informed, strengths-based environment fosters healing and hope.

Long-Term Impact

Homeward Bound is more than a place to stay—it’s a space to rebuild. Many graduates leave with housing secured, personal goals in motion, and a new sense of belonging. With each renovation, referral, and recovery milestone, Homeward Bound continues to honor its legacy while evolving to meet today’s needs.
