What Does it Take to be a Compeer Volunteer?

If you know how to be a good friend, that’s most of it! Also:

  • Minimum age of 18

  • Background check clearance

  • Able to give 4 hrs/month of your time

A Compeer volunteer is matched one-to-one with a Chester County adult who has been referred by a professional.

Spending time with a supportive friend has been shown to boost self-esteem, reduce loneliness, and increase well-being in a person dealing with mental health challenges.

Volunteers receive training and can choose their friend. Pairs are matched up based on shared interests, location, and other factors. After you meet your friend, staff provide ongoing support. This is a most flexible volunteer opportunity! You and your friend decide the times you meet or talk. Activities can include whatever safe activities the two of you choose, such as meeting for coffee or a meal, taking a walk, going to a community event, or just chatting.

We offer occasional group events such as bowling and picnics. Through the gift of friendship, you will gain a sense of satisfaction and personal growth and have the opportunity to help another person.

A portion of Compeer’s budget comes from the generosity of private donations from individuals, organizations, religious groups, and foundations.

The remainder of our funding is provided in a contract between Compeer’s sponsor organization, Mental Health Partnerships, and the Chester County Department of Mental Health/Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities.
