About Our Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) Training

Transform Lived Experience into Empowerment

Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) Training at Mental Health Partnerships (MHP) is a dynamic educational program designed for individuals who’ve experienced their own mental health challenges and wish to support others on their path to recovery. By turning personal insights into a professional skill set, CPS graduates become a vital force in peer-led services throughout Philadelphia and Southeastern Pennsylvania. This training is state-approved and aligns with national standards, ensuring that participants gain recognized credentials along with indispensable hands-on expertise.

Why Become a Certified Peer Specialist?

Peer support has been proven to lower hospitalization rates, increase engagement in treatment, and foster hope among those facing mental health conditions. As a CPS, you serve as a living testament to the possibility of recovery, bridging the gap between clinical staff and participants. Whether you plan to work in community centers, hospitals, drop-in programs, or even private practice settings, the CPS credential allows you to meaningfully impact lives by sharing coping strategies, offering empathy, and guiding others through complex systems.

Key Training Components

  • Core Competencies: Building effective communication skills, ethical boundaries, and crisis response techniques.
  • Recovery-Oriented Principles: Understanding trauma-informed care, self-advocacy, and person-centered planning.
  • Skill Labs & Role-Playing: Gaining practical experience through simulations that mirror real-world scenarios.
  • Professional Development: Learning about documentation, confidentiality, and working in multidisciplinary teams.

Holistic Curriculum & Hands-On Practice

Our comprehensive curriculum covers topics such as motivational interviewing, active listening, and the Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) framework. Students dive into interactive workshops, peer discussions, and small-group exercises, all led by experienced instructors who’ve navigated their own mental health journeys. We also incorporate cultural competency modules to ensure graduates can respectfully engage with individuals from diverse backgrounds, recognizing the unique social factors that influence recovery.

In many classes, participants practice role-playing real-world interactions—like de-escalating a tense conversation or offering comfort after a relapse. Feedback from peers and instructors helps refine communication skills, making the learning process collaborative and supportive. These practical sessions not only boost confidence but also prepare future CPS professionals for the emotional demands of the job.

Certification & Ongoing Support

Upon completing the coursework and passing any required assessments, graduates earn a recognized CPS certification. Which makes them eligible to set for the Pennsylvania Certification board exam. This opens the door to a range of peer-support roles in nonprofits, mental health clinics, government agencies, and even private organizations. MHP also provides ongoing professional development opportunities, such as advanced peer specialist trainings, specialized workshops (e.g., substance use support), and networking events. Staying connected with the broader peer-support community helps you keep refining your skills, stay current on best practices, and prevent burnout.

Real-World Impact

The influence of Certified Peer Specialists is multifaceted. Participants often note that having a CPS on the team fosters an atmosphere of empathy and transparency, easing anxieties about treatment. In one example, a local drop-in center reported a marked reduction in crisis incidents after including CPS staff in daily operations, as participants felt more comfortable sharing concerns before they escalated.

Moreover, CPS graduates frequently experience personal growth. Many share how formalizing their lived experience into a professional role gave them renewed purpose, helping them transform past hardships into a meaningful career path. By guiding others toward wellness, they reinforce their own recovery journey, creating a positive feedback loop that benefits the entire community.

Promoting Diversity & Inclusion

MHP prioritizes diverse voices in our CPS Training. We encourage individuals from all cultural backgrounds, ages, and identities to apply. This diversity enriches classroom discussions, broadens collective understanding, and ensures we can more effectively serve communities with distinct perspectives on mental health. Some cohorts may focus on specialized populations—such as youth peer support or bilingual training—enabling graduates to serve particular demographics with heightened sensitivity.

How to Enroll

Enrollment periods for CPS Training occur throughout the year. Applicants typically do not need documented experience of mental health challenges and a strong desire to support others. They only need to disclose experience with a mental health challenge. A minimum of a high school degree is recommended, but is not required.  An initial interview helps our instructors assess readiness and ensure a good fit for the program. Financial aid or scholarships may be available for those who meet certain criteria, reflecting MHP’s commitment to making this opportunity accessible to everyone.

Ultimately, Certified Peer Specialist Training stands as a testament to the power of lived experience. By becoming a CPS, you turn your story into a lifeline for others—one rooted in empathy, practical skills, and the unwavering belief in recovery’s possibility. If you’re looking to transform your personal challenges into a professional calling, MHP’s CPS program is your gateway to making a tangible, positive difference in the lives of individuals across Southeastern Pennsylvania.
